The Letter You Never Got

A Small-Town Romance

by Rina Philips · The Tidewater Secrets #1

Heat level 2/5
She came to renovate a cottage. He refused to leave his workshop. They divided the space with masking tape. Then they found 243 undelivered love letters in the wall between them.

Nora Callahan doesn't ask for help. Not since she was nine years old and learned that the only person she could count on was herself — the girl who fixed the faucet at midnight because no one else was going to. So when she lands her first major solo job — renovating the Harbormaster's Cottage in Saltmere, Oregon — she plans to do it alone. She has a truck, a tool belt, and a coffee addiction. She does not have a plan for the man already inside.

There's just one problem: Finn Maguire has been using the back room as his woodshop for three years, and he's not moving.

Finn doesn't talk much. He carves small wooden animals — a whale, a seal, a fox mid-stride — and leaves them anonymously in the community mailboxes around town. He hasn't let anyone close since his ex-wife told him he was unreachable. She says the tape dividing the cottage is yellow. He says it's blue. They are both right.

They work in aggressive silence. She plays Fleetwood Mac too loud. He doesn't react. She needs a tool from his side; he hands it to her before she asks. She doesn't know what to do with a man who notices things. He doesn't know what to do with a woman who leaves a carved whale on the highest shelf — the one she reaches for every day.

Then Nora discovers a hidden room behind the shared wall — stacked with letters that were never delivered. 243 pieces of mail spanning decades, all connected to a fishing boat called the Meridian that sank in 1965. The official story says it was a storm. The letters say otherwise.

As they decode the mystery together, the masking tape stops mattering. The silence stops being aggressive. And the man who carves animals for strangers starts building something he won't show her — a hand-carved shelf, measured to fit the exact space where she keeps his carvings, with his name carved in the corner so small you'd miss it if you weren't looking.

But Nora has spent her whole life being the roof. And when she hides an injury rather than ask for help, the thing she's built with Finn comes apart as quietly as a door clicking shut.

"He said, 'Let it rain,' and I wanted to. But I'd spent twenty-two years being the roof, and I didn't know how to be the person underneath it."

"Stop fixing," he said. "Just stand here." And I stood there. In the cottage we'd rebuilt together. And I let him hold me. Not because I was broken. But because standing still was the bravest thing I'd ever done.

This book will make you hold your breath through every silence and cry about a hand-carved whale left on a windowsill. You will not be able to stop reading after Chapter 14.
